Update: June 22, 2022: On the advice of several groups & individuals, Karts has stopped his expedition due to extreme flooding in the Yukon Territory. He’ll return to the river on May 27-28, 2023 to pick up where he left off in Carmacks, Yukon, Canada.

The decision was also made on the advice of local and regional authorities and for the respect of the river through the beliefs of the First Nations peoples. Karts did not want to be disrespectful.

Yukon 2020™ is an expedition to canoe 2,020 miles/3,250km of the Yukon River from Bennett Lake in the mountains of Canada to the Bering Sea in Alaska. Art “Karts” Huseonica, 72, will be the oldest documented male to open canoe the river. Frequently referred to as the “Kindness Expedition,” it has been postponed yet again until May 28, 2023 due to COVID-19 travel restrictions placed on the team by Canada and the Yukon Territory governments, and unprecedented 100-year flooding event on the river. The expedition plans to keep the branding name of Yukon 2020™. Representatives from Alaska Natives groups, Yukon First Nations, and the Metis Nation of Canada will be joining Karts for short river segments. For detailed expedition updates, click on the expedition’s BLOG link.

Even though Karts is getting older in numbers, he has no plans on slowing down anytime soon! At 72, Karts will be the oldest documented male to paddle the entire Yukon River in an open canoe!
